Adding or Editing an Inset Panel

Problem

You want to add content inside a small inset panel, and you want to use it on more than one of your pages.

Solution

In many sites, a small inset panel containing related content or a list of links can be added to the page. Usually its location will be at the side of the main content.

This inset panel must first be created as a separate block in the WCMS, and then it can be inserted into one or more web pages. The block must be stored in a special folder named "inset_panel_blocks," which is nested inside the "_content" folder.

The block cannot be published by itself. After creating an inset panel block, you must link it to one or more pages where you want the block to appear, and then publish those pages. If you edit the content in the inset panel block at a later time, then you must re-publish every page where the block appears.

Creating the inset panel:

  1. In the Asset Tree at the left, select the folder at _content/inset_panel_blocks
  2. Click on "New" in the top menu bar, and select Inset Panel
  3. Type the text for the Panel Title
  4. Most inset panels are set up as a list of links, so you will need to type the text for the label and the title attribute for the link
  5. The target for the link can be either another page within the WCMS, and external URL to a page on any other web site, or a file that you already uploaded to the WCMS
    • To select another page within the WCMS, click the Browse icon next to "Link to Internal Page," and then select the page you want
    • To link to a page on another web site, type its complete URL in the field labeled "Link to External URL"
    • To link to a file that you already uploaded to the WCMS, click on the Browse icon next to "Link to Internal File," and then select the file you want
  6. To add another link, click the small plus (+) sign
  7. Change the System Name to a name that you prefer
  8. Click the Submit button

Adding the inset panel to a page:

  1. Select the page that will get the inset panel
  2. Click the Edit tab
  3. Scroll down to the Inset Panel region, which is inside the Page Content section
  4. Click the Browse icon
  5. In the browser that pops open, select the inset panel block that you want to insert
  6. Click Confirm
  7. Click the Submit button

Editing an inset panel:

  1. In the Asset Tree at the left, open the folder at _content/inset_panel_blocks
  2. Select the block that you want to edit
  3. Click the Edit tab
  4. Make your changes
  5. Click the Submit button
  6. Select every page where the inset panel appears and publish it
    • Select a page where the inset panel appears
    • Click the Publish tab
    • Click the Submit button
    • Repeat for every page that has this inset panel
