UR WISE students staffed its information table during the Special Opportunities Fair of Spring Open Campus’ Engineering Day. Prospective students who had been admitted to the University and expressed an interest in engineering stopped by the Fair to learn about engineering and science opportunities available at the University of Rochester. Current WISE students passed out brochures and buttons, and provided answers to students’ questions about being a WISE student. Contact Melanie Pelcher at mpelcher@mail.rochester.edu.
Volunteers Needed: Project ADEPT Workshop
Wednesday, April 9, 12:30-4:00 pm, Washington Irving Elementary School, 2400 Chili Avenue
Transportation provided if necessary
UR WISE was been invited to sponsor an activity for BOCES’ Project ADEPT (A Diversified Enrichment Program for the Talented) Workshop for gifted and talented elementary school students with a high interest in problem solving. Through demonstration and discussion, these students gained an understanding for how engineers, mathematicians, and scientists must use creative problem solving in their work every day. Community members and WISE students developed real life “engineering problems” for students to practice thinking and working like scientists, mathematicians and engineers. After analyzing a problem scenario, students worked in teams to brainstorm possible solutions, evaluate the options, and then design the best solution.
UR WISE’s ran a boat design activity. (Students designed and built a cargo boat of limited size dimensions to hold the maximum amount of cargo before either sinking or tipping over.) Please contact Lisa Norwood at lnrw@seas.rochester.edu
Volunteers Needed: WISE Phone-athon to Perspective Female Science and Engineering Students
Thursday, April 10, 8:00-10:00 pm, Lattimore 306

Volunteers Needed: Take Your Child to Work Day
Thursday, April 24, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (shorter shifts available), Goergen Hall Atrium
On April 24, 2008, children ages 9-15 came to campus to experience a variety of fun, educational activities during a University-wide program entitled, “Take Your Child to Work Day.” WISE and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences sponsored a tour location called Extreme Science and Engineering for three groups of 15-20 children for 45 minutes each.
Peer Coaching Program
Monday, August 25, 2008 at 9:00am
Last year, UR WISE developed a pilot peer-to-peer mentoring program that assigned small groups of freshmen in select majors to junior and senior students in order to help the new students adjust to college life and courses within their intended majors.
This year, there are once again only a handful of freshmen women who are intending to major in computer science (CSC), electrical and computer engineering (ECE), mechanical engineering (ME), optics (OPT), mathematics (MTH/APM), chemical engineering (CHE), and physics and astronomy (PHY/PAS/AST).
Freshman thinking about majoring in one of these majors and can be paired with upperclass students to help them feel part of a community where you are successful, encouraged and supported
For more information, contact Melanie Pelcher or visit the facebook event page.
