Kathleen Parthé associate professor of Russian and director of Russian studies at the University, has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies, an international center devoted to research, located in Washington, DC. The council serves as the primary selection panel for institute scholars as well as providing advice on program activities. In the 22 years since the Kennan was founded, only six other specialists in Russian literature have served on this body. Parthé will be a member of the Kennan Institute Council for the next four years.
Luke O. Schoeniger has been appointed assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the Medical Center. Schoeniger specializes in cancer surgery and surgery of the alimentary tract. He re ceived his M.D. and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the New York University School of Medicine and completed his internship, research fellowship, and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

John M. Carey, associate professor of political science, has had his book Terms Limits and Legislative Representation recently published by Cambridge University Press. Through a study of Costa Rica, the only long-term democracy to impose term limits on legislators, and comparisons of that experience to the legislatures of Venezuela and the United States, Carey tests the central arguments made by both the supporters and opponents of the reform .
Our Sisters' Promised Land, a recently published book by Ayala Emmett, associate professor of anthropology at the University, focuses upon the long campaign waged by women activists to have the Israeli government recognize Palestinian aspirations for self-government, and to change its official policy from one of conflict to one of peaceful co-existence. The book is published by the University of Michigan Press.
