Rehab division gets departmental status

The University's Division of Rehabilitation Medicine has been elevated to full department status and will be known as the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Department is nationally known for its exemplary care programs for patients suffering the effects of stroke, or brain and spinal cord injuries.

Charles J. Gibson, who has been on faculty since 1969 and chief of the division since 1975, has been named chair of the new department.

The two components of the department, at Strong Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital, conduct both physical and occupational therapy on an in-patient and out-patient basis. In addition, the department runs a residency program, an in-patient rehabilitation program, and a physician practice.
