Marvin I. Herz, professor of psychiatry, and director of the Mental Health Services Research and Long-Term Care Program, has been named president of the American College of Psychiatrists. With over 650 members nationwide, the American College of Psychiatrists is one of the largest honorary organizations for psychiatrists in the country. As president, Herz's primary responsibilities include appointing committee chairs and overseeing membership activities. Herz, a well-known expert on schizophrenia who has authored numerous books on the subject, has been a University of Roches ter faculty member since 1991.
Arthur J. Moss, professor of medicine, has been selected to serve as a member of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Study Section 1 of the Division of Research Grants, effective immediately and ending in June 2000. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, achievements, and honors. Moss has been a member of the Rochester faculty since 1961.
Robert J. Panzer, associate professor of medicine at the Medical Center, has been appointed medical director of StrongCare, a newly formed managed care plan providing health care for nearly 8,000 Rochester area residents. In this role, Panzer will promote high quality, cost-effective clinical care, working closely with physicians and leaders at each of the six participating hospital networks: F.F. Thompson Hospital (in Canandaigua), Lakeside Memorial Hospital (in Brockport), Highland Hospital, Park Ridge Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, and Strong Memorial Hospital.
Kristine M. Shanley, a woman with strong ties to Rochester area sports on the scholastic and collegiate levels, will coach the varsity softball team at the University of Rochester. Shanley has served in varying athletic capacities - coach, recreation specialist, and official - since graduating from the State University of New York at Brockport in 1987. She coached softball at Monroe Community College for two seasons (1996 and 1997) plus one year at Brockport (1995). For six and one-half years, she was a Recreation Program Specialist at Brockport with major responsibilities in the intramural program.
