Debate team to take on Brits this week

The University's debate team, ranked ninth in the nation, will engage in a battle of wit and strategy against Britain's top debaters on October 1. Following British tradition, the audience will serve as judges of the contest at 7 p.m. in Hoyt Hall.

The debate, which is the second event in this year's Wednesday Evening Lecture Series presented by the Alumni Association, will center on the topic, "This House upholds the state's right to censor." The British team will affirm and the Rochester team will negate the topic.

The British team is composed of two members who have each accumulated numerous accolades. Dan Nieldle, a resident of London, won the European Debating Championships in 1996, was twice voted the best speaker at the Oxford Intervarsity, and was runner-up at the World Debate Championship in South Africa in 1997. His partner, Andrea Sloan, a native of Scotland, was ranked forth best individual speaker in the world at the 1995 World Debating Championships at Princeton.

The popular lecture series, formerly known as the Rochester Life Lecture Series, is co-sponsored by the Iota chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Rochester.

Admission is free, but reservations are requested. Call x3-5894.
