The University is in the process of converting its central utilities plant -- which generates steam for use in heating and air conditioning of River Campus and Medical Center buildings -- from coal to natural gas, a cleaner burning source of energy. The conversion is expected to be complete by summer '98. The plant has been coal-fired since it was built in 1929.
