Anthony Academy offers 'Conversations'

Four nationally prominent journalists will consider how women are portrayed in the media during the University"s third annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton/Susan B. Anthony Conversations on Contemporary Issues, Thursday, October 30, from 5:15 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery.

The conversation will feature an address by pioneer journalist Marlene Sanders, the first woman to anchor a prime-time television network newscast and first to be named a news vice president at ABC. Sanders is co-author of a book on the history of television newswomen, Waiting for Prime Time: The Women of Television News. A faculty member of New York University"s Department of Journalism, Sanders is a professional in residence at the Freedom Forum"s Media Studies Center. She also narrates documentaries, industrial videos and PBS specials.

"This year"s Stanton/Anthony Conversations bring together a diverse group of women who are able to lend an important perspective on the issues surrounding women and the media," said Nan Johnson, director of the Susan B. Anthony University Center and a former Monroe County, N.Y., legislator. "We"re excited to have so many high-caliber women who will share their insights into today"s journalism."

The invited speakers bring years of journalistic experience to the table:

The 1997 Conversations are dedicated to the work of the late Nancy Woodhull, former executive director of the Media Studies Center of the Freedom Forum. Woodhull will be posthumously awarded the Valued Colleague Award at 5:15 p.m. in the Sculpture Garden. A light gourmet buffet will be served; cost is $30. The conversations follow in the Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the conversations is free. Seating for both events is limited, however, and reservations are recommended.
