Rochester phone books

The 1998 Rochester Telephone phone directories will be distributed to River Campus, South Campus, Eastman School, Memorial Art Gallery, and University Properties the week of November 17.

The Medical Center will receive books on Wednesday, November 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the ground floor north corridor area. Departments must pick up directories during these hours.

Recycle old phone books by dropping them in Dumpsters at the following locations and times: Loading Dock #5, Room G 4900, Medical Center, November 17-20 or ground floor north corridor area, November 19 only; corner Trustees Road and Intercampus Drive, November 17 -20; and the north side of Goler House, November 17-20.

Federal Express contract

Federal Express will be conducting two mini-information seminars at the University in November. Participants should bring pre-printed airbills, along with any questions or concerns. The sessions will provide transportation information, along with demos of Federal Express shipping software.

Sessions will be held on November 10, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Room K207, Medical Center, and on November 24, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Haven's Lounge, Wilson Commons. Participants may come and go any time during those hours.

Early openings

The following University offices in the Medical Center have scheduled earlier openings on specific days to accommodate night staff schedules:

MERT members needed

Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) members are technicians who respond to emergency calls in the Medical Center area, providing care and transportation for employees, visitors, and patients who are not in inpatient care. (MERT members respond to emergencies only when doing so does not interfere with work responsibilities at the Unversity.)

Directory additions

The 1997-98 Faculty/Staff Telephone Directory has some new additions. A map of the Medical Center is on page 272, showing the floors and room numbering system. Two post office reference guides are also included, one for Medical Center properties and area hospitals, and one for River Campus departments.

Indoor track

The indoor track in the Rivers Campus Sports Complex is being resurfaced. The Field House will be closed for the duration of the project, which should be completed by Thanksgiving.

Waltzing

The University's 13th annual Viennese Ball will be held from 9 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, November 15 in Wilson Commons. The community is invited to attend the University's largest campuswide, semi-formal ball, which will feature the live music of the University Chamber Orchestra, conducted by David Harman, and the University Choir, conducted by Thomas Folan.

Free dance lessons will be offered Wednesday, November 12 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in the May Room. The public is invited, and no registration is necessary.

Women and health care

Local women will discuss their experiences as health care professionals during a panel discussion at the University on Thursday, November 13.

The talk will be held at 8 p.m. in the Eisenberg Rotunda in Schlegel Hall. Admission is free and open to all.

This installment of "Working Women: The '90s and Beyond," a series of career panels, will feature Diane Andrews, national marketing director of the Finger Lakes Long-Term Care Insurance Co. and a 1995 graduate of the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration; Christine Burns '93, clinical assistant professor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry; Phyllis Collier, executive director of the Perinatal Network of Monroe County; and Claudia Groenevelt '85, '87, a health care financial consultant.

Worker pride

A conference exploring the pride and plight of Polish workers in Europe and America will be held here from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. November 15, in Room 207, Schlegel Hall.

The program will begin with remarks by Adam Urbanski, president of the Rochester Teachers Association, and continue with presentations by leading specialists in the field of labor history, labor relations, the Solidarity workers' movement and Polish ethnicity in the United States. The conference is among the highlights of this year's Skalny Lecture and Artists Series.

Volunteer interpreters needed

Patient Access Services is in need of employees or students who are native speakers of foreign languages (excluding Spanish) to serve as volunteer interpreters within the Medical Center.

Research paper assistance

Science and engineering students can benefit from a library research and writing assistance service that is being offered at the Carlson Library and the Physics-Optics-Astronomy Library. Students meet individually with a science librarian who helps them plan their research, develop a strategy, identify key terms, evaluate and organize information, select relevant print or electronic resources, use style and citation guides, and prepare bibliographies. Follow-up sessions are available as needed.

PCOS research

The University's Endocrine Metabolism Unit is looking for premenopausal women between the ages of 18 through 40 with diagnosed polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) for a clinical research trial. The investigation will examine the use of drug therapy in improving the symptoms of PCOS.

Parent/child relationships

The University's Toddler Center is studying learning in children and parent/child relationships, infamilies with a depressed parent. Researchers are looking for volunteer families with children from three to eight years old who meet a list of other criteria, including one depressed parent. All families will be required to complete one visit to the University and will be paid $20 for the visit.

Donors sought

Sperm donors between the ages of 18 and 40 are needed for the University's artificial insemination program. Volunteers must be willing to be a donor for at least a year and undergo routine blood and urine testing.

Asthma study

The Pulmonary Clinical Group is looking for people with mild asthma ages 19 through 60 for asthma research. Volunteers need to be non-smokers and will receive an honorarium of $35.
