EXHIBITS
December 13 through January 25, New Russian Art: Paintings from the Christian Keesee Collection. Forty-five works collected in the early 1990s by Oklahoma businessman Christian Keesee showcase some of the best and brightest young artists now working in the former Soviet Union. No longer dependent upon artists' unions and official sanctions, these artists are free to portray social and economic realities with wit, irony, and often wry humor.
Through February 15, Storm Boy and Frog Girl: Tales of the Northwest Coast by Paul Owen Lewis. This exhibition includes six original paintings from children's books by Paul Owen Lewis and contemporary works by Northwest Coast artisans from a Rochester collection. Memorial Art Gallery.
Through February 15, Glorious Warriors and Heavenly Landscapes: The Art of the Japanese Print. This exhibit features 40 color woodblock prints and a rare folding album celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Japanese printmaking giants Ando Hiroshige and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Assembled by Rochester print collectors Merlin Dailey and Geoffrey Oliver, the prints depict heroes and samurai, poetic landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits of stage performers and courtesans. Memorial Art Gallery.
Through January 18, Festive Lights: Menorahs from Rochester Collections. This exhibition of menorahs from around the world celebrates the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. This year, the focus is on menorahs from the 1960s to the 1990s, including works by Albert Paley and Al Wilson of Rochester. Memorial Art Gallery.
Through January 11, Crèches from Around the World: The Earl Cage Collection. The manger scene by its many names--French crèche, Italian presepio, German Krippe, Spanish belèn, or Southwest American nacimiento--has long been part of family Christmas decorations. Rochester photographer Earl Kage has collected crèches for more than 50 years. This year, he is showcasing works from the latter half of the 20th century. Memorial Art Gallery.
