Ring in the holidays

The Friends of the University of Rochester Libraries will hold an annual holiday reading of selected works from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library. "An Evening of Holiday Words and Music" will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. Readings will be given by Thomas Gavin and Jarold Ramsey, professors emeriti in the Department of English; Elizabeth Brayer, author and historian; and Brenda Lee, assistant dean at the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Series to cover school-home ties

Teachers, mentors, caregivers and administrators for children ages 8 and younger can learn effective ways to work with the parents of the children they serve during three series of Warner School workshops slated for the spring.

"Building Blocks to Better Communication with Parents" runs late Wednesday afternoons from Jan. 14 to March 18 at the Strong Museum. Covered will be teacher-parent partnerships, effective parenting groups and boundary-setting while working with families. Registration for the first workshop series is Jan. 9. CPR classes scheduled

The Multidiscipline Labs will offer CPR classes from January to March 1998. Basic life support original classes will be held on Jan. 12, 19 and 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. and March 11, 18 and 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. A pediatric original course will be offered Feb. 10 and 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Three-hour refresher courses will take place Jan. 7, 22 and 26; Feb. 3, 18 and 24; and March 6, 18 and 26. One session is required. Call x5-3285 for more information.

College musicians to take the stage

Musical groups in the College Music Program will present three concerts this week.

The Chamber Orchestra will perform Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. The program features clarinetists Michael Goldberg and Kenneth Grant. Goldberg is chief meteorologist for WROC-TV 8. Grant is on the faculty of the Eastman School. They will perform the Krommer Concerto for Two Clarinets. The 40-member all-student ensemble also will present Mozart's A Musical Joke and Haydn's Symphony No. 104, "London."

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mitchell Robinson, will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, in Strong Auditorium. The University Choir and Chamber Singers, directed by Tom Folan, will perform a holiday concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Interfaith Chapel.

Admission to all three concerts is free.

School counselors' workshop slated

A one-day program for school counselors on the impact of the changing family will be held from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Wilson Commons. Hosted by the Warner School's Office of Professional Development, the program will help counselors work with parents raising young children, and show them how to increase collaboration between home and school and to incorporate family spiritual traditions in interventions. Sleepers needed for research

Volunteers are needed to participate in a new research study by the Sleep Research Laboratory. Non-depressed people and those who are depressed but not taking medication are needed. For two nights in the sleep laboratory, participants will receive $100 and a free sleep evaluation. Call x5-8221 for more information.

Indigestion study seeks volunteers

Plagued by stomach problems? The Isaac Gordon Center for Digestive Diseases at the Genesee Hospital is participating in a nationwide study to improve treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia, or indigestion. Participants may be eligible if they have persistent stomach discomfort, indigestion, belching, heartburn, bloating or gas pain, or nausea. Participants will receive free examinations, study medication and compensation of $200. For more information, call 263-5616.

Sign up for hoops league

The Medical Center Athletic Club is about to start the 1997-98 Winter Basketball League. Games will be held Tuesday or Thursday nights beginning the second week of December. Individuals and teams are invited to sign up. Stop by or call the club, x5-2437 or x5-1422.
