Library offers term paper research aid

A new approach to term-paper planning, Term Paper Research Assistance, offers students an extensive consultation with a librarian, away from the distractions at the Reference Desk. The program, developed by staff at rush Rhees, allows student and librarian to work out a research strategy together for the assigned paper, including not only the names of likely print and electronic sources, but a suggested sequence for using them and some preliminary practice to see which sources seem most productive for the topic. The sessions often include some work with Voyager, the online catalog, to develop effective techniques customized for the particular topic.

The student also has an option to schedule follow-up sessions with the same librarian at later stages of the research. In some cases, the librarian may refer the student to a subject specialist librarian for additional research suggestions, or to the College Writing Center for guidance about writing the paper.

Term Paper Research Assistance is available to University undergraduates every weekday from 2 to 3:30 p.m., through the end of April. Appointments are accepted but not required. Students may reserve the 3 to 3:30 p.m. time slot by calling x5-4437. Walk-in consultations are arranged by visiting the Reference Desk between 2 and 3 p.m. weekdays. River Campus faculty are being urged to recommend the service to their undergraduate students.
