Getting in touch with Facilities

The University Facilities Customer Service Center has added new telephone answering features and an e-mail address, which will be available on April 28. After calling x3-4567, emergency calls will press 1 and be immediately answered by an operator. Routine calls will be answered in the order received. Non-emergency requests can also be made via e-mail, at ufservice@macmail.cc.rochester.edu, or through the web, at http://www.facilities.rochester.edu, where a work order form is available.

Summer day camp

University Family Care will sponsor the Camp Fire Kid's Club, a traveling summer day camp. With nine weekly sessions from June 30 through August 29, the camp will include swimming, crafts, and field trips. The schedule is 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the camp is open to children ages five through 12 of University employees.

Gettysburg tour

The Alumni Association is sponsoring a weekend guided tour of Gettysburg, led by Larry Hudson, associate professor of history, from Friday, May 9, through Sunday, May 11. The trip includes a ban quet dinner, with keynote address given by Hudson, on Saturday night. Cost is $200 per person, double occupancy, or $220 per person, single occupancy, and includes meals, hotel, and tours. Partici pants are responsible for their own transportation to Gettysburg.

CPR classes

Classes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation will be offered once again to the University community by the Multidiscipline Lab. Cost is $36 for the original course for faculty and staff, $43 for guests, and free for medical students The refresher course is $29 for members of the University community, $34 for guests, and free for medical students.

Physicist Berry to speak here

A renowned British physicist will give a talk at the University this month on the physics underlying such phenomena as rainbows, twinkling stars, and the patterns of sunlight seen in shallow bodies of water.

The lecture, Unweaving the Rainbow, by Sir Michael Berry, Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Bristol, will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, in Room 109, Bausch & Lomb Hall. Noted as an excellent speaker, Berry will tailor his remarks for non-scientists. His talk is free and open to the public.

Berry, a theoretical physicist who has made contributions to fields ranging from classical optics to quantum chaos, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996. He is an elected member of aca demic societies including the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of Arts, the European Academy, and the National Academy of Science.

Book Sale

New books will be discounted from 50 to 70 percent off retail prices on May 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the atrium of Miner Library. Hundreds of quality hard cover educational, general interest, children's, hobby, nature, reference, and cookbooks will be available.

Anxiety disorders

The Department of Psychiatry is sponsoring a free screening for anxiety disorders on Wednesday, May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., in Room 1-9041, Medical Center. Participants will fill out a questionnaire, then meet with a clinician for evaluation and possible referral. Walk-ins are welcome.

Jazz on Friday

The University Jazz Ensemble will perform the music of Duke Ellington, Steve LaJoie, and Herbie Hancock in a free concert at 8 p.m., this Friday, April 25 in Lower Strong Auditorium. David Pope will direct.

The concert also will feature the premiere of a piece by Rochester student Christopher Holmes.

Dandelion music

Collective Soul will perform at 8 p.m., on Dandelion Day, Saturday, May 3. The concert will promote the band's newest album, Disciplined Breakdown, the first album since their 1994 smash release Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid.

The band, whose single "Shine" was named Billboard's #1 Hot Album Rock Track of 1994 and who won the Billboard Music Award for "Album Rock Song of the Year," have played a string of arena concerts with Aerosmith and made an appearance at Woodstock '94.

The concert will be held in the Alexander Palestra. Tickets go on sale for students on Wednesday, April 9, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the main lounge of Wilson Commons at a cost of $10 for bleachers, $12 for floor seats. Tickets for the public go on sale on Thursday, April 10, at the Common Market in Wilson Commons and at the Record Archive on Mt. Hope at a cost of $14 for bleachers, $16 for floors seats.

College music concerts

Two concerts featuring performing groups in the College Music Program will be held in May.

The University Choir and Chamber Singers will perform madrigals composed over the centuries, in A Madrigal Feast, at 8 p.m., Friday, May 2, in Strong Auditorium.

The University's 100-member Symphony Orchestra will perform the fourth concert of the season at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 3, in Strong Auditorium. Michelle Nguyen, Concerto Competition winner, will perform Grieg's Piano Concerto and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Admission to both concerts is free. For more information, call x5-2828.

Team up for children

A benefit for Children's Hospital at Strong, with two races, will be held on May 31, in Genesee Valley Park. A team relay event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a two-mile river walk is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.. Free lunch will be provided by Outback Steakhouse for registered participants. Blood drive

A faculty and staff blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, in the May Room of Wilson Commons, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments may be made by calling x5-4085. Walk-in visitors are also welcome.
