EXHIBITS

April 1­July 6, Leagues Apart: The Men and Times of the Negro Baseball Leagues. This show is the story of the men of the old Negro Leagues. Included are 15 original pastels for the book of the same name by Lawrence Ritter, as well as uniforms, photographs, and other artifacts from an extensive collection of Red Wings memorabilia. Memorial Art Gallery.

May 3­June 15, Sacred Sand Painting of Tibet: Creating a Circle of Peace. Three monks from the monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama will spend six weeks at the Memorial Art Gallery creating the Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) Mandala. Mandalas are intricate circular sand paintings which symbolize the essential teachings of Buddhism. The monks will answer visitors' questions during the process. Memorial Art Gallery.

May 3­June 15, Seven Years in Tibet, 1944­1951: Photographs by Heinrich Harrer. In 1944, Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer arrived in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa following a harrowing escape from a British POW camp. One of few Westerners permitted entry to the country, he soon became the trusted friend and unofficial tutor of the then teenaged Dalai Lama. His 42 black-and-white photographs are an exceptional visual record of a vanishing way of life. Memorial Art Gallery.

May 3­June 15, Living Tibet: Photographs by Bill Warren. Award-winning photojournalist Bill Warren has made three trips to Dharamsala, India, home of the Dalai Lama's government-in-exile. The ten color photographs in this exhibition document efforts of the refugee community there to preserve Tibetan culture. Memorial Art Gallery.

Through May 18, The Painterly Print. This exhibition shows how 20th century printmakers have combined the dynamic elements of painting with the methodical techniques of lithography, serigraphy, and intaglio. Features works of Marc Chagall, Edvard Munch, Larry Rivers, and Helen Frankenthaler. Memorial Art Gallery.

May 19­June 15, School Without Walls Mandala Project. Students from Rochester's School Without Walls will construct their own mandala incorporating symbols of their own design while using traditional tools and techniques.

May 23­August 17, Artists' Artists. This collection features self-portraits of artists as diverse as Rembrandt van Rijn and Andy Warhol. The works from the Gallery's collection span 500 years.

Continuing, Henry David Thoreau Collection. This exhibition showcases a rare, complete, and extremely valuable collection of Thoreau's works, donated to the University of Rochester Libraries by Raymond R. Borst. It includes first editions of all Thoreau's writings and other materials. Department of Rare Books, Rush Rhees Library.
