Hackers and Whackers

The 12th Annual Hackers and Whackers Employee Golf Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 9 a.m., at Shadow Lake Golf Course, 1850 Five Mile Line Road. Cost is $60 per person and includes golf, cart, lunch, and banquet.

Science camp

Girls ages 8 to 12 can register for a two-week math, science and computer camp at the University this summer. In its seventh year, camp sessions will be held July 7 to 18, and July 21 to August 1. The cost is $300 for the all-day program.

The camp's objectives are to encourage girls to develop their scientific reasoning and basic data analysis skills. Campers spend their time on the University campus doing hands-on activities as well as taking field trips.

The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Campers are enrolled on a first come, first served basis.

Teacher as scholar

Area schoolteachers who want to research a topic of interest under the guidance of University mentors are invited to apply for this year's "Teacher as Scholar" program, sponsored by the Warner School.

Open to a limited number of participants, the program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, July 21 to August 1, in Rush Rhees Library.

Participants will receive orientation to a wide array of high- and low-tech library tools and methods available for research. The cost of the program is $295. An application and two letters of recommendation are due May 23.

Women volunteers sought

The Reproductive Endocrinology Unit and Menopause Center at the Medical Center are looking for women to participate in a hormone study.

Volunteers must be healthy, post-menopausal women between the ages of 40 and 65. After a physical examination, women will be randomized to one of 8 treatment groups and receive various combinations of an FDA-approved estrogen and/or progestin, or placebo.

During this one-year study, volunteers are seen every three months. Benefits to volunteers include free Pap smears and lab tests, free mammogram, and possible relief of menopausal symptoms based on the medication(s) they receive. Compensation of $450 is available.

Softball

Rosters are now being accepted for the upcoming recreational softball leagues at the Medical Center Athletic Club. Play is available on Monday or Thursday nights beginning at 5:30 p.m. Ten weeks of play begin the week of May 19. Cost is $150 per team. For more information or a roster, please call x5-1442.

Day camp

The Medical Center Athletic Club will be offering summer camp June 30 through August 22 for children ages 7 to 12 years old. Specific emphasis of the camp is to promote a positive and rewarding experience for children and to involve them in noncompetitive fitness and sports activities. Day trips to the beach and area parks for hiking or sports activities are also planned.

Telephone directory proofs

The first set of proofs for the new Faculty/Staff Telephone Directory will be circulated to departments on May 6. Deadline for returning the first set of proofs to the University Telecommunications Division is May 30. A second set of proofs will be circulated on July 25 and the deadline for returning them is August 4. Early returns are encouraged.

Summer art for kids

The Memorial Art Gallery is offering five, one-week sessions of day school for children ages 7 through 12, from June 23 through August 22. The schedule includes morning and afternoon art classes, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
