Sports information

The Office of Sports Information, which handles publicity for the Department of Sports and Recreation, is looking for interns.

Interns will perform some general office duties (typing, filing, mailing) and will be trained to prepare game programs, write hometown press releases, keep statistics for a variety of sports, and make post-game calls to media.

University Computer Sales is a local provider of personal computers and related information technologies, carrying a wide variety of computers, printers, and accessories.

Computer Sales offers educationally discounted prices (typically five to 50 percent) on Microsoft, Adobe, Borland, Claris, Corel/WordPerfect, Symantec, and many more productivity and game software titles.

Study abroad opportunities

The Center for Study Abroad and Interdepartmental Programs offers five new study abroad opportunities for undergraduates, including programs at ORT-Braude College in Israel and Uppsala University in Sweden. The program at ORT-Braude is designed especially for science and engineering students. At Uppsala University students can choose from a full range of courses. Other opportunities include a film studies program in Paris, as well as programs in Arezzo, Italy, and at Jagiellonian University in Poland. In all, the University sponsors study abroad programs in over 50 locations around the world.

Philosophy internships

Internships in the Rochester City Schools are available for the fall 1997 semester through the Department of Philosophy. Interns work with elementary school children on thinking and writing strategies. Interns have worked on a wide variety of specific projects, including school newspapers, debates, speech making, and analyzing the persuasive techniques used in advertising.

Activities Fair

The 1997 Activities Fair is scheduled for Friday, September 5, in the River Campus Sports Complex, from 3 to 5 p.m. All clubs and organizations will be represented. Visitors will have the opportunity to read brochures and ask questions of organization representatives.

Orchestra auditions

The River Campus Music Program sponsors two orchestral ensembles that will hold open membership auditions during the first week of classes this fall. The 100-member University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, which will perform works by Brahms, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky this season, rehearses on Tuesdays, from 7:30-10 p.m. in Upper Strong Auditorium.

The University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra, which will perform pieces by Prokofiev, Beethoven, and Debussy this season, rehearses on Mondays, from 4:50-6:50 p.m., and on Wednesdays, from 5 to 6 p.m., in Upper Strong Auditorium.

Learning assistance

Learning Assistance Services offers students study-skills counseling, math and science study groups, disability support, tutoring support, and writing tutorials, with equipment for word processing.

Studying children

The University's Toddler Program is looking for students to participate in an independent study program at the Mt. Hope Family Center. The program studies parent and young child relationships; students may earn credit for being involved.

Women and the law

The Susan B. Anthony University Center is offering the Women's Attorneys Program, a new, three-part series for students interested in applying for law school.

The center will also offer the program Women and the Media, and participants will have the chance to discuss growing opportunities for women in this field.

Spotlight's on Sophomores

Spotlight's on Sophomores is a series of ongoing programs for second year students. Events will include a trip to Niagara Falls and to Rochester's museums, a talk with President Jackson, and opportunities for academic planning.

Student Dental Plan

The University will once again offer the University Student Dental Plan. Through the Guardian Insurance Company, enrolled students receive services from the University Dental Faculty Practice Group and the Eastman Dental Center.
