Each year, I have the pleasure of welcoming our new students to Rochester and introducing the Class to the University community. The beginning of an academic semester is always a time of excitement and enthusiasm for what promises to be a rewarding experience for many very bright and talented young scholars.
This year, we are once again welcoming a notable group of freshmen to our ranks. Many are high school valedictorians and salutatorians; all have distinguished themselves as outstanding students, with remarkable credentials and accomplishments.
The Class of 2001 hails from 43 states and 13 foreign countries; in addition to exceptional geographic diversity, the freshman class is well represented ethnically. The class comprises about 45 percent female students and 55 percent male students. Many of our incoming students have distinguished themselves in areas such as music, sports, student government, and community service. Their energy and talents will further enrich our undergraduate community.
It is my hope that each member of the Class of 2001 will take full advantage of his or her Rochester experience and get to know our University community well. Please join me in welcoming all members of the Class of 2001.
