University employees who apply for non-union positions around the University now can apply directly to the departments doing the hiring. Applications no longer need to be routed through Human Resources.

Runners, get ready!

Runners and walkers are welcome to join the University's team for this year's Chase Corporate Challenge. The 5K race will be held around Highland Park, Thursday, June 11, at 7 p.m. Call Krisse Farquhar, 461-5646, by June 4 to register.

Register for child care

Childtime is still accepting enrollment in the new on-site child care facility for ages 3, 4 and 5. The center is scheduled to open in September. To register, call Doris Robinson in Human Resources, x3-4644, or Childtime, 1-800-294-4115.

Kids' sports camp slated

The Medical Center Athletic Club will hold its Fun Fitness Camp for Children June 29 to August 21, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp is for 7- to 12-year-old children of University employees. Sports and field trips are planned. For more information, call x5-2437.

Catholic educators to look at media

The Warner School will sponsor an educational institute, "Values, Media Literacy, and Action," aimed at redefining the future of Catholic education in the 21st century. Featuring well-known speakers, the program will be held Thursday, July 9 and Friday, July 10 on the River Campus. The registration deadline is June 19. Mass spectrometry lab opens

A mass spectrometry laboratory has opened in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The lab's centerpiece, a new multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, is one of only four at academic institutions nationwide. It provides precise measurements of isotope ratios of metals in a variety of substances. The lab also houses another mass spectrometer capable of detecting minute amounts of metal atoms. These instruments will be used for geological, environmental and biomedical research.

Keep a piece of library history

If you miss the feel of a stiff paper card to help you find a book in Rush Rhees Library, you might want some to take home.

In the first phase of its removal, the subject card catalog and the thousands of cards in it will be taken from the library's Reference Department in June. Though the cards have not been updated since March 1, 1988, they provide valuable reference for scholars and those who want a record of important books and topics.

Fight cancer with a night at Frontier

The Cancer Center will hold a Family Night at Frontier Field Thursday, June 25. The Red Wings will host the Toledo Mud Hens. During the game, the Center will raffle off prizes including golf clubs, golf passes, and tickets to Seabreeze and Darien Lake. For ticket information, call x5-6310 or x5-5199.

Research participants needed

Alzheimer's disease--(1) melatonin for sleep disturbances--Participants must be at least 55, have a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer's disease, wear a wrist actigraph, and have a caregiver. Call 760-6564 or 760-6553. (2) idebone to treat learning and memory deficits--Must be 50 years old, have a diagnosis of probably Alzheimer's disease, and have a caregiver. Call 760-6561, 760-6565, or 760-6553. (3) Aricept for vascular dementia--Study examines effects of Aricept on people over 40 who have cognitive impairment due to cerebrovascular disease. Call 760-6561 or 760-6553. (4) Aricept and sertraline for behavorial manifestations of Alzheimer's disease. Must be at least 50 years old. Call 760-6561 or 760-6553.

AIDS vaccine--Healthy, HIV-negative volunteers ages 18-60 needed for clinical research trial of HIV prevention vaccines. Participants receive up to $700. Call x3-AIDS.

Smoking cessation--Project50 is recruiting 1,800 subjects for a study of self-help smoking cessation methods in smokers over 50. Participants will receive up to $15, and no classes or meetings will be held. Call x3-3871 or 1-888-222-3993 (outside Monroe County).

Gum disease--Individuals in generally good health who have periodontal (gum) disease sought for dental study to test a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. Call x5-5780 or x5-9001.

Toothpaste--Individuals ages 20-75 who have a lower, removable partial denture and are in good health are sought for a three-month research study. Call Eastman Dental Center, x5-1133 or x5-5078.

High cholesterol--Diabetics sought for study to compare two drugs used in the treatment of high cholesterol. Participants must be between 21 and 70 years old and have diabetes mellitus and high cholesterol. Individuals who have had a heart attack within the last three months or have taken probucol or troglitazone are not eligible. Call the Endocrine Clinical Trials Office, x3-3972.

Sleep--Depressed and non-depressed individuals needed for sleep research. Participants must be medication-free, 18 to 60 years old, and healthy. Call the Sleep Research Laboratory, x5-8221.

Hormone therapy--Women needed for one-year study of hormone therapy. Volunteers must be healthy, post-menopausal, and between 40 and 65, and must not have had a hysterectomy. Participants will receive $450 compensation. Call x5-4149.

Diabetes--Men and women at least 40 years old with Type II diabetes needed for clinical trial of an investigational drug. Participants will receive free lab testing, physical exams, and other tests and may be reimbursed for time and travel. Indigestion--This nationwide study aims to improve treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia, or indigestion. Must have persistent stomach discomfort, indigestion, belching, heartburn, bloating, gas pain, or nausea. Participants will receive free examinations and study medication and compensation of $200. Call the Isaac Gordon Center for Digestive Diseases at the Genesee Hospital, 263-5616.

Parental depression--To study learning in children and parent/child relationships in families with a depressed mother. Need families with children from three to eight years old who meet a list of other criteria. One visit to the University required. Participants will be paid $20 for the visit. Artificial insemination--Sperm donors between the ages of 20 and 39 needed. Must be in or graduated from college, participate for at least a year, and undergo routine blood testing. Call the Andrology Lab, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, x5-2491.

Volunteers sought

Gallery docents--The Memorial Art Gallery is recruiting docents to lead visitors through the museum. An informational meeting will be held Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. in the gallery's Bausch and Lomb Parlor. To reserve a seat at the meeting, or to receive more information, call 473-7720, ext. 3070.

Cancer awareness--The American Cancer Society seeks volunteers to promote cancer prevention through its Speakers Bureau and health fairs. Call 288-1950.

Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT)--Members are technicians who respond to emergency calls in the Med Center, providing care and transportation for employees, visitors, and patients who are not in inpatient care. (MERT members respond to emergencies only when doing so does not interfere with work responsibilities at the University.) To find out more, call x5-3285.

Language interpreters--Patient Access Services needs employees or students who are native speakers of foreign languages (excluding Spanish) to serve as volunteer interpreters in the Med Center. Call x5-4778.
