Sign up for soccer camp
Children and teenagers interested in honing their soccer skills can sign up for the 1998 soccer camps at the University. Directed by Terry Gurnett, women's soccer coach, and Mike Pilger, men's soccer coach, the camps will be held in two sessions, August 3-7 (girls 7-17, boys 7-12) and August 10-14 (girls 7-12, boys 7-17). Plan for health symposium
The Medical Center's fifth annual Critical Care Symposium, featuring Cardiovascular Pre-Conference Day, will be held October 29 and 30. It is sponsored by the School of Nursing, the hospital's Nursing Practice, and the Greater Rochester/Finger Lakes Area chapter of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

New center has patient simulator
The Department of Anesthesiology is to open the Medical Simulation Center on August 4. The Center will be a training and research facility for health-care professionals.
Featured is a computer-controlled, full-body patient simulator that incorporates models of cardiovascular and respiratory systems and drug responses based on clinical data, presenting realistic vital signs and responding to clinical management. The center also can be configured as a realistic operating room, intensive-care unit, patient room or field location, and contains a variety of medical equipment.

Free art lectures offered
Public lectures will be held as part of the University's first-ever Summer Institute in Visual and Cultural Studies, funded by the Getty Grant Program.
Scholars in art history and related fields from Central and Eastern Europe are meeting with colleagues from around the world for an intensive introduction to new theoretical and interpretive strategies in the humanities. The University was awarded a $350,000 grant last year to design and host the institute.
All lectures are being held at 8:15 p.m. in the Gowen Room of Wilson Commons on the River Campus. They are free and open to the public. For remaining topics and speakers, see the Calendar in this issue.
Simon School honors Gleason
The Simon School held its commencement ceremony Sunday, June 14 in Eastman Theatre. James Gleason, chairman and president of Gleason Corp., delivered the commencement address and received the David T. Kearns Medal of Distinction, which recognizes "significant achievements in business, public service and education." Gleason is a member of the Simon School's first Executive Development Program graduating class, a University senior trustee, and a member of the Simon School's Executive Advisory Committee.
Scholarship marks historic year
The University's Women's Club has presented $10,000 to the University to be used for the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship. This contribution, more than twice the amount usually contributed to the scholarship fund each year, commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention and serves as a reminder of the $10,000 that Anthony raised to fund the admission of women to the University.

Body fat content--Must be 18-60 years old, healthy, non-pregnant, very thin, and very little body fat. Stipend up to $100. Call x5-2984 or x5-3778.
Metabolism--To study abnormalities in metabolism in patients with neuromuscular diseases. Volunteers must be healthy, 21-60 years of age, non-obese, and ambulatory. Call the Department of Neurology, x5-5409.
AIDS vaccine--Healthy, HIV-negative volunteers ages 18-60 needed for clinical research trial of HIV prevention vaccines. Participants receive up to $700. Call x3-AIDS.
Smoking cessation--Project50 is recruiting 1,800 subjects for a study of self-help smoking cessation methods in smokers over 50. Participants will receive up to $15, and no classes or meetings will be held. Call x3-3871 or 1-888-222-3993 (outside Monroe County).
Alzheimer's disease--(1) Melatonin for sleep disturbances--Participants must be at least 55, have a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer's disease, wear a wrist actigraph, and have a caregiver. Call 760-6564 or 760-6553. (2) Idebone to treat learning and memory deficits--Must be 50 years old, have a diagnosis of probably Alzheimer's disease, and have a caregiver. Call 760-6561, 760-6565, or 760-6553. (3) Aricept for vascular dementia--Study examines effects of Aricept on people over 40 who have cognitive impairment due to cerebrovascular disease. Call 760-6561 or 760-6553. (4) Aricept and sertraline for behavorial manifestations of Alzheimer's disease. Must be at least 50 years old. Call 760-6561 or 760-6553.
Gum disease--Individuals in generally good health who have periodontal (gum) disease sought for dental study to test a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. Call x5-5780 or x5-9001.
Toothpaste--Individuals ages 20-75 who have a lower, removable partial denture and are in good health are sought for a three-month research study. Call Eastman Dental Center, x5-1133 or x5-5078.
High cholesterol--Diabetics sought for study to compare two drugs used in the treatment of high cholesterol. Participants must be between 21 and 70 years old and have diabetes mellitus and high cholesterol. Individuals who have had a heart attack within the last three months or have taken probucol or troglitazone are not eligible. Call the Endocrine Clinical Trials Office, x3-3972.
Sleep--Depressed and non-depressed individuals needed for sleep research. Participants must be medication-free, 18 to 60 years old, and healthy. Call the Sleep Research Laboratory, x5-8221.
Hormone therapy--Women needed for one-year study of hormone therapy. Volunteers must be healthy, post-menopausal, and between 40 and 65, and must not have had a hysterectomy. Participants will receive $450 compensation. Call x5-4149.
Diabetes--Men and women at least 40 years old with Type II diabetes needed for clinical trial of an investigational drug. Participants will receive free lab testing, physical exams, and other tests and may be reimbursed for time and travel. For more information, call study coordinator Keri-Lynn Colicchio, CCRC, x3-4922.
Indigestion--This nationwide study aims to improve treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia, or indigestion. Must have persistent stomach discomfort, indigestion, belching, heartburn, bloating, gas pain, or nausea. Participants will receive free examinations and study medication and compensation of $200. Parental depression--To study learning in children and parent/child relationships in families with a depressed mother. Need families with children from three to eight years old who meet a list of other criteria. One visit to the University required. Participants will be paid $20 for the visit. Artificial insemination--Sperm donors between the ages of 20 and 39 needed. Must be in or graduated from college, participate for at least a year, and undergo routine blood testing. Call the Andrology Lab, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, x5-2491.
Volunteers sought
Gallery docents--The Memorial Art Gallery is recruiting docents to lead visitors through the museum. An informational meeting will be held Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. in the gallery's Bausch and Lomb Parlor. To reserve a seat at the meeting, or to receive more information, call 473-7720, ext. 3070.
Cancer awareness--The American Cancer Society seeks volunteers to promote cancer prevention through its Speakers Bureau and health fairs. Call 288-1950.
Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT)--Members are technicians who respond to emergency calls in the Med Center, providing care and transportation for employees, visitors, and patients who are not in inpatient care. (MERT members respond to emergencies only when doing so does not interfere with work responsibilities at the University.) To find out more, call x5-3285.
Language interpreters--Patient Access Services needs employees or students who are native speakers of foreign languages (excluding Spanish) to serve as volunteer interpreters in the Med Center. Call x5-4778.
