Todd Lot spots open
Starting September 15, eight parking spaces will be available in Todd Lot, located near Wilson Boulevard across from the Fraternity Quadrangle. This lot was previously reserved entirely for use by prospective students and their families. The new zone will be referred to as Zone 1B North, and the charge for parking in this lot will be $550 per space.

Lattimore cars go three-deep
The Lattimore Road Lot 2 will implement three-deep parking on Monday, August 31. Parking vehicles three-deep instead of two-deep will allow Lot 2 to accommodate more vehicles. To ensure that the middle vehicle can get out during the day, a parking staff member will be on hand to help.

To familiarize staff with recent changes in its procedures, the Office of Human Resources has created a user's guide to personnel action forms. Orientation sessions were held for department administrators in February and March, and more are planned for individuals who have assumed human resources duties for their offices since then.
Staff can register for one of two sessions to be held next month: September 17, 2-3 p.m., Gowen Room, Wilson Commons or September 23, 2-3 p.m., Medical Center K-207 (2-6408). University cyclists to ride for MS
Employees are invited to ride with a University team in the 13th annual Multiple Sclerosis 150km bike tour on August 29 and 30. Cyclists will tour through the Finger Lakes region, with an overnight stop in Seneca Falls. Medical and mechanical support will be provided, with water and snacks offered at rest stops.
The tour is not a race; participants ride at their own pace and raise donations to fund MS research and services. To take part, call 271-0801, x289 or 288, and mention that you would like to ride with team UR Riders, captained by Lisa Norwood, 436-2944; lnrw@seas.rochester.edu.
Clinical research seminars launched
The Clinical Research Institute will begin a seminar series, "Achieving High Quality Clinical Research," on September 15 at 1 p.m., in Medical Center K-307 (3-6408). The hourlong seminar, "Clinical Research at the University of Rochester: the Year in Review," will be led by Cindy Dunn, director of the Clinical Research Institute, formerly the Office of Clinical Research and Development.
The seminar series will be held the second Tuesday of each month, September through June. The series will educate physicians, clinical research coordinators, and support staff about conducting studies in compliance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP) standards and University policies and procedures.

The University's mixed bowling league will launch the new season in September. Four-person teams of men and women are forming now. The league meets every Thursday night at 5:30 at the Olympic Bowl on Scottsville Road. To join a team, call Jerry Lubecki at 254-2361.
Secondary trauma examined
Professionals who deal with sexual abuse, domestic violence, homicide, suicide and other traumatic events can learn how trauma affects them, during a conference at the Medical Center September 18. "The Impact of Trauma on the Helping Professional: Transforming the Pain" will feature Laurie Anne Pearlman, research director of the Traumatic Stress Institute in Connecticut, and other professionals from the University and Rochester community. The conference is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry's Psychotherapy Institute. For information and registration materials, call x5-2277.

Role models--Junior Achievement seeks volunteers to share work experiences with students in city and suburban elementary classrooms. Training, curriculum, lesson plans, and materials provided. Cancer awareness--The American Cancer Society seeks volunteers to promote cancer prevention through its Speakers Bureau and health fairs. Call 288-1950.
Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) --Members are technicians who respond to emergency calls in the Med Center, providing care and transportation for employees, visitors, and patients who are not in inpatient care. (MERT members respond when doing so does not interfere with work responsibilities.) To find out more, call x5-3285.
Language interpreters--Patient Access Services needs employees or students who are native speakers of foreign languages (excluding Spanish) to serve as volunteer interpreters in the Med Center. Call x5-4778.
Research participants needed
Cerebral palsy--Children ages 2 to 18 with severe CP that affects walking needed to participate in the North American Growth in Cerebral Palsy Project, a national study of the disease. Call x5-2986.
Kidney and muscle metabolism--Healthy volunteers ages 21-60 needed for research study on the effect of varying blood glucose levels on kidney and muscle metabolism. Outpatient and inpatient visits. $300 for completing study. Call x5-4517 or x3-4923.
High blood pressure--African Americans needed for a study of Teveten, an investigational blood pressure medication. Participation is 12 to 18 weeks; medicine will be prescribed. Call x3-3972.
Diabetes--Diabetics not taking insulin needed for study of combination of two approved diabetes drugs. Participants must take medicine prescribed and be seen regularly for six months. Call x3-3972.
Sperm donors--Men ages 21-39, all ethnic groups, needed to participate for one year in confidential sperm donor program. Compensation. Call the Andrology Lab, x5-4020.
Metabolism--To study abnormalities in metabolism in patients with neuromuscular diseases. Volunteers must be healthy, 21-60 years of age, non-obese, and ambulatory. Call the Department of Neurology, x5-5409.
AIDS vaccine--Healthy, HIV-negative volunteers ages 18-60 needed for clinical research trial of HIV prevention vaccines. Participants receive up to $700. Call x3-AIDS.
Smoking cessation--Project50 is recruiting 1,800 subjects for a study of self-help smoking cessation methods in smokers over 50. Participants will receive up to $15, and no classes or meetings will be held. Call x3-3871 or 1-888-222-3993 (outside Monroe County).
Gum disease--Individuals in generally good health who have periodontal (gum) disease sought for dental study to test a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. Call x5-5780 or x5-9001.
Toothpaste--Individuals ages 20-75 who have a lower, removable partial denture and are in good health are sought for a three-month research study. Call Eastman Dental Center, x5-1133 or x5-5078.
Alzheimer's disease--(1) Melatonin for sleep disturbances -- Participants must be at least 55, have a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer's disease, wear a wrist actigraph, and have a caregiver. Call 760-6564 or 760-6553. (2) Idebone to treat learning and memory deficits -- Must be 50 years old, have a diagnosis of probably Alzheimer's disease, and have a caregiver. Call 760-6561, 760-6565, or 760-6553. (3) Aricept for vascular dementia -- Study examines effects of Aricept on people over 40 who have cognitive impairment due to cerebrovascular disease. Call 760-6561 or 760-6553. (4) Aricept and sertraline for behavorial manifestations of Alzheimer's disease. Must be at least 50 years old. Call 760-6561 or 760-6553.
Sleep--Depressed and non-depressed individuals needed for sleep research. Participants must be medication-free, 18 to 60 years old, and healthy. Call the Sleep Research Laboratory, x5-8221.
Hormone therapy--Women needed for one-year study of hormone therapy. Volunteers must be healthy, post-menopausal, and between 40 and 65, and must not have had a hysterectomy. Participants will receive $450 compensation. Call x5-4149.
Diabetes--Men and women at least 40 years old with Type II diabetes needed for clinical trial of an investigational drug. Participants will receive free lab testing, physical exams, and other tests and may be reimbursed for time and travel. For more information, call study coordinator Keri-Lynn Colicchio, CCRC, x3-4922.
Smoking cessation--Smokers 50 years old or older who smoke at least 10 cigarettes a day needed for study. Subjects can receive up to $15. Call Project50, x3-3871.

Indigestion--This nationwide study aims to improve treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia, or indigestion. Must have persistent stomach discomfort, indigestion, belching, heartburn, bloating, gas pain, or nausea. Participants will receive free examinations and study medication and compensation of $200. Parental depression--To study learning in children and parent/child relationships in families with a depressed mother. Need families with children from three to eight years old who meet a list of other criteria. One visit to the University required. Participants will be paid $20 for the visit. Artificial insemination--Sperm donors between the ages of 20 and 39 needed. Must be in or graduated from college, participate for at least a year, and undergo routine blood testing. Call the Andrology Lab, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, x5-2491.
