Wiring for new phones starts in September
University Telecommunications and NEC, the contractor chosen to upgrade the University's telephone system, have begun cable plant and wiring work associated with the project.Beginning in September, there will be six teams of contractors working in the Medical Center preparing for January 1999 installation. Activities will include work in the new communications closets being constructed as part of the Network and Switch Infrastructure projects. These spaces will contain both voice and network wiring.
Dennis Punch, NEC project manager for the cable plant team, will be coordinating these activities. He and his group will be wearing NEC and University badges for easy identification. The process includes the installation of duct work and cable wiring.
Staff and faculty should make closets, offices, and other wire access points available to the work teams. Notices will be posted in each Medical Center area as work begins.
Employees with questions about specific work activities can call Dennis Punch or Van Goss at x3-2033 or x3-2036, respectively.
For general questions about the switch modernization, contact Sharon Shinners, assistant for the project, at Telecommunications, 727 Elmwood Ave., Suite 102; x5-9506; fax 273-1013; or e-mail: sshinner@utd.rochester.edu.
