Hartnett show eyes technology's role

The Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons opens the new academic year today with "Unit of Measure," a video installation by Gene Gort.

Gort has created a sculptural environment incorporating video to explore how dependence on technology relates to the vulnerability of the physical. The work attempts to address the problems and cultural assumptions of technological innovation: the degree to which it is used to measure success and failure; the crisis of representation it entails; and the potential of inappropriate comparisons.

Gort is an artist and independent video producer living in Hartford, Conn., whose work has been shown in numerous film and video festivals, museums and galleries. He is associate professor of video and performance and director of the Video Program at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford.

"Unit of Measure" will be exhibited at the Hartnett Gallery from September 14 to October 11. A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, September 14 in the gallery, and a presentation/screening will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 15 in Morey Hall 321 on the River Campus.

Admission is free. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact the Wilson Commons Information Desk, x5-5911.
