M&D to hold convocation

The School of Medicine and Dentistry will hold its Opening Convocation for faculty and medical and graduate students Wednesday, October 7, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Whipple Auditorium (Room 2-6424 in the Medical Center). A reception will be held in the Helen Wood Hall Lounge immediately following the ceremony. The convocation will include presentations of awards for scholarship and teaching during the 1997-98 year, Dean's Teaching Scholars Awards, fellowships and named professorships.

Give blood

The American Red Cross will hold the River Campus Faculty/Staff Blood Drive Tuesday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the May Room of Wilson Commons. For more information, call x5-4085.

Tori Amos concert slated

Vocalist Tori Amos will appear in Eastman Theatre at 8 p.m., Thursday, November 12. Undergraduate tickets go on sale October 7. Tickets for the public will be available October 8 at the Common Market in Wilson Commons and Record Archive on Mt. Hope Avenue.

Hear about successful aging

A Health Bites talk will be held Tuesday, October 6 in the Medical Center, Room 1-9041. Carol Podgorski, executive director of Center for Lifetime Wellness, will talk about successful aging and the center's services and programs.

Magic Johnson will speak

Former NBA star Magic Johnson, who announced his contraction of the HIV virus in 1991, will speak to raise awareness of AIDS during Family Weekend, Saturday, October 24 at 9 p.m. in the Alexander Palestra. Tickets go on sale to undergraduates September 30. Discount tickets for faculty, staff, and graduate students will be available October 1 at the Medical Center bookstore and the Common Market in Wilson Commons.

Laser safety program launched

The Environmental Health & Safety Department has instituted a laser safety program for research labs. All those who work in labs having Class 3b and 4 lasers (high-powered lasers) are covered under this program. Personnel must receive training, institute appropriate control measures to prevent exposures to the intense light source, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and undergo an eye examination.

Counseling groups form

Counseling & Mental Health Services is starting two therapy groups for members of the University community. Survivors of Sexual Assault or Sexual Abuse provides a confidential place to share concerns. There is a nominal fee for members not covered by the student health plan. Bereavement, led by a counselor and interfaith chaplain, is for anyone who has experienced the death of someone close. Interested individuals can call Mary or Cheryl, x5-2361.

Human rights worker will talk

Human rights worker Consuelo Cabrera will speak on "Indigenous and Women's Rights in Guatemala" at 12:30 p.m., Friday, October 9 in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library. Cabrera has worked with families affected by the protracted civil war in Guatemala. Her visit is sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology and Religion and Classics.
