Rates set for new telephone system

University Telecommunications has released telephone rate information for the 1999-2000 year reflecting the installation of a new phone system for the University.

The rates represent a "fully amortized, non-subsidized rate structure for the new phone system and accompanying services," said David Lewis, director of University Telecommunications.

While in the past costs for data networking --that is, departmental computer connections to the University "backbone"--have been covered in part by the rates charged to departments for phone service, there has been a conscious decision in the establishment of the rates to separate the two, Lewis said. For the first time next year, there will be separate charges for backbone connections. The rate schedules are being developed and are expected to be announced in November, to accommodate budgetary planning cycles for 1999-2000.
