Korea's Kumho Asiana will perform here
The Kumho Asiana String Quartet, one of Korea's finest chamber music ensembles, will perform in a special concert at 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 10, in Interfaith Chapel on the River Campus.
In the first half of the concert, the Kumho Quartet will perform the music of Shostakovich and Korean-born German composer Isang Yun. After intermission, the quartet will be joined by Eastman's acclaimed Ying Quartet for a performance of Mendelssohn's rousing Octet for Strings, op. 20--giving Rochester audiences an infrequent chance to hear that great work in concert.
Since the ensemble's founding in 1990, the Kumho Quartet has given numerous concerts and special performances in Korea and abroad. The quartet recently completed a 40-city world tour--which included a stop last fall in Rochester as part of the Eastman-Ranlet Series--receiving enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics alike. Hailed as a "vibrant new talent" by London's Daily Mail, the quartet frequently is praised for its expressive playing and beautiful tone.
The quartet features violinists Eui-Myung Kim (also known as Joseph Kim) and Soon-Ik Lee; violist Chan-Woo Chung; and cellist Sung-Won Yang. Each member is a respected musician in his own right, with impressive performance, educational, and teaching credentials.
The concert is free and open to the public.
