Student researchers coming here

The 13th National Conference on Undergraduate Research, a forum that promotes academic achievement by undergraduates, will be held on the River Campus April 8-10, 1999.

University faculty, staff and students, particularly those associated with the College, will be asked to volunteer as hosts and help prepare for the conference. Thomas Krugh, professor of chemistry and director of undergraduate research for the College, is the site chairman and a member of the board of governors of the NCUR organization.

Each year, as many as 250 colleges and universities are repre5nted by about 2,000 students, who apply for the opportunity to present their scholarly and artistic research through oral presentations, performances, and poster sessions.

"Hosting this national conference is one indication of our commitment to undergraduate research," said Provost Charles Phelps. "Undergraduate research involves 'hands-on' investigative work with faculty in every academic field in the University, in the humanities and the social sciences as well as in the natural sciences. The concept of undergraduate research is woven completely into the fabric of our curriculum, for example, through the Quest courses. It's a natural for us to host this conference."
