Former administrator Dowd dead at 73

Frank J. Dowd, Jr., a University alumnus who held administrative posts here for many years, died Nov. 2. He was 73.

A Chicago native, Dowd studied history at the University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1948 and a master's degree in political science in 1957. He worked in a variety of administrative jobs, including associate dean of students, from 1949 to 1961, when he left to become vice president of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. When he returned to Rochester in 1968, he became dean of the University School of Liberal and Applied Studies and was later named associate provost, and then vice president, for student activities. He retired in 1980.

Dowd was a veteran of World War II and an active member of the Monroe County Democratic Party.

Predeceased by his daughter Judith, Dowd is survived by two children, Laura and Allan; their mother, Janis Dowd; sisters Barbara Wright, Carol Brady and Mavis Dowd; and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
