Invited speakers for the Fanny Knapp Allen Chair Lectures on Photography represent a cross section of contemporary thinking about image-making, from a reconsideration of the documentary work of Dorothea Lange to the avant-garde of abstraction and digital imaging.
"These artists have a great deal to tell us about their careers and how they work in today's environment," said Carl Chiarenza, who is Fanny Knapp Allen Professor of Art History. "The fact that these women are dealing with ground-breaking work and theories makes an important contribution to this year's recognition of the 150th anniversary of the first Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls in July 1848."
The weekend of events is sponsored by the University in collaboration with George Eastman House, and with generous additional funding support from Kodak Professional, a division of Eastman Kodak Co. A $15 registration fee ($5 for students with valid identification) is required.
Beginning Saturday, April 4, four lectures will be held at George Eastman House followed by a reception that evening. Another four lectures will be presented Sunday, April 5, at the University, followed by a reception in the Hartnett Gallery where work by the participants will be exhibited. The symposium will close Monday, April 6, with a roundtable discussion at George Eastman House.
Chiarenza, an acclaimed abstract photographer, planned the one-of-a-kind lecture series to honor the long-standing contributions of women to photography, and to celebrate the anniversary of the Women's Rights Convention, as well as to honor the commitment of Fanny Knapp Allen to the arts.
The deadline for mail-in registration is March 15. For details, call the Department of Art and Art History at x5-9249.
