Rush Rhees Library and Sibley Music Library are now subscribing to two new web-based products available on-campus and off-campus through the University's Internet provider.
NewsBank NewsFile (1993-current) is a full-text news resource including 70,000 articles annually from more than 500 regional, national and international newspapers and other news sources. Besides current issues and events, NewsBank is particularly strong in biographical information and arts coverage--film and television, literature, fine arts, architecture, and the performing arts.
Global NewsBank (1996-current) contains selected full-text articles from more than 1,500 foreign news sources. Topics include politics, economics, culture, business, science, and technology. All articles and broadcasts in native languages have been translated to English.
Access them through One-Stop or the local catalog, or go directly to: http://infoweb. newsbank.com.
Research paper programs
As research paper season intensifies, River Campus Libraries are continuing and expanding their programs for individual appointments with students launching papers.
At Rush Rhees, Term Paper Research Assistance (TPRA) is accommodating the post-spring break rush by adding walk-in hours. Now through Friday, May 8, undergraduates starting a humanities or social sciences paper may drop in at the Rush Rhees reference desk without advance appointments from 3 to 4 p.m. weekdays or 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Advance appointments are still available at other times, as they are throughout the semester, by calling x5-4437.
During a half-hour TPRA session, a librarian works with the student in a quiet setting to map out research strategies, identify key terminology, and select relevant resources. Follow-up sessions are available, as well as information about campus services, such as the Writing Center, that can help with other aspects of the project.
At Carlson Library and the Physics-Optics-Astronomy Library, science and engineering students, undergraduate or graduate, can make appointments for the Library Research and Writing Program by inquiring at either library or by calling x5-4465. At these sessions, students meet individually with a science librarian who helps them plan their research, develop a strategy, identify key terms, evaluate and organize information, select relevant print or electronic resources, use style and citation guides, and prepare bibliographies. Follow-up sessions are available.
