Two students were honored for their presentation of a meritorious scientific paper at the annual winter meeting of the American Association for Dental Research Rochester Section. Evangelia Morou-Bermudez, Center for Oral Biology, received the Michael G. Buonocore Award, and Cristiane SaRoiz Fonteles, Pediatric Dentistry, Eastman Dental Center, received the Basil G. Bibby Award. Mark Moss, assistant professor at Eastman Dental Center, chaired the session.
Students and faculty of the School of Medicine and Dentistry traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, to participate in the 7th annual conference of the International Health Medical Education Consortium this month. Participants discussed medical outreach to underserved populations around the world. Students who attended were: Nader Botros, Marianne Bottros, Jimmy Chan, Jen Edman, Elizabeth Reddy, Kristin Riley-Lazo, Alex Rogers, Beth Starr, Robert Thompson, Blake Yerman, and Thuy-Nga Pham. Faculty who attended were Nancy Chin, Silvia Bird, and Frank Richeson.
Three Medical Center employees have received Chairman's Quality Awards: Michele Bonyak, staff nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit; Bill Fuller, assistant supervisor of medical records; and Meridith Ruder, social worker in the Surgical and Medical Intensive Care Units and the Cardiothoracic Unit.
Duncan Moore, a University optics professor and adviser on technology policy to President Bill Clinton, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
