Bibby earned a Ph.D. in bacteriology in 1930 as a Rockefeller Dental Fellow at the University. While director of Eastman Dental Center from 1947 to 1970, Bibby advanced dentistry as a biologic discipline at a time when other leaders in dental education were technically oriented. Under his watch, Eastman Dental's graduate programs in pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and general dentistry achieved international distinction.
Bibby first demonstrated that fluoride reactions with the enamel surface prevent caries. He also researched the cariogenicity of food and advanced understanding about the role of pellicle, plaque, and oral bacteria.
Bibby played an important part in securing funding for research by Eastman scientists to study the use of adhesive plastic coatings for dental procedures, one of the cornerstones of preventive and restorative dentistry.
Bibby received numerous medals and honors, including the 1988 ADA Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research. He is survived by his wife Beatrice, two daughters, a son, and 10 grandchildren.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made for dental research to Eastman Dental Center, 625 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, New York 14620.
