The first set of proofs for the 1998-99 Faculty/Staff Telephone Directory will be sent to departments May 5. The deadline for returning the proofs is June 1. A second set will be circulated July 27, with a return deadline of August 3.
For the first time, proofs for the Official Frontier White and Yellow Pages will be circulated with the first Faculty/Staff Directory proofs. Frontier deadlines are May 18 for advertisement proofs and June 1 for listing proofs. No second sets of Frontier proofs will be circulated.

The 13th Annual Hackers & Whackers Golf Tournament will be held Tuesday, August 4, at Shadow Lake Golf Course. The cost is $62.50 per player, which includes golf, cart, lunch, dinner and prize. Employees who have been trained at ACS in the Impromptu software package are invited to take a refresher class for free. A limited number of seats is available in the regular monthly classes. The Office of Human Resources in the Medical Center and the University Benefits Office are now open six days a week. Med. Center Human Resources, Room G-7009, and University Benefits, Room G-8011, will be open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Employees are encouraged to join hundreds of volunteers from around the community to "Stroll for Strong Kids" on Saturday, May 30 at 11 a.m. in Genesee Valley Park. The two-mile walk raises money for patient care and pediatric research at Children's Hospital at Strong. Participants raise money through sponsorship pledges; those who raise $50 or more will receive a T-shirt. The event will be followed by a free lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse, and music and activities for children.

Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation, the book that is credited with starting the modern animal rights movement, will give a talk on the use of animals for education and research, at 3 p.m., Friday, May 8 in the Lower S-wing Auditorium in the Medical Center. At 8 that evening, he'll give the Seventh Lyon Daughters Memorial Lecture in Bioethics at the Rochester Academy of Medicine; a reception will follow.

CampFire Kid's Klub, a traveling summer day camp, will hold 10 weekly sessions at the University from Monday, June 29 to Friday, September 4. Activities will include games, arts and crafts, swimming, and field trips. It will be held in Spurrier Gym on the River Campus from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is available for 5- to 12-year-old children of University employees. High cholesterol--Diabetics sought for study to compare two drugs used in the treatment of high cholesterol. Participants must be between 21 and 70 years old and have diabetes mellitus and high cholesterol. Individuals who have had a heart attack within the last three months or have taken probucol or troglitazone are not eligible. Call the Endocrine Clinical Trials Office, x3-3972.
Sleep--Depressed and non-depressed individuals needed for sleep research. Participants must be medication-free, 18 to 60 years old, and healthy. Call the Sleep Research Laboratory, x5-8221.
Hormone therapy--Women needed for one-year study of hormone therapy. Volunteers must be healthy, post-menopausal, and between 40 and 65, and must not have had a hysterectomy. Participants will receive $450 compensation. Call x5-4149.
Diabetes--Men and women at least 40 years old with Type II diabetes needed for clinical trial of an investigational drug. Smoking cessation--Smokers 50 years old or older who smoke at least 10 cigarettes a day needed for study. Subjects can receive up to $15. Call Project50, x3-3871.

Indigestion--This nationwide study aims to improve treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia, or indigestion. Must have persistent stomach discomfort, indigestion, belching, heartburn, bloating, gas pain, or nausea. Participants will receive free examinations and study medication and compensation of $200. Parental depression--To study learning in children and parent/child relationships in families with a depressed mother. Need families with children from three to eight years old who meet a list of other criteria. One visit to the University required. Participants will be paid $20 for the visit. Artificial insemination--Sperm donors between the ages of 20 and 39 needed. Must be in or graduated from college, participate for at least a year, and undergo routine blood testing. Call the Andrology Lab, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, x5-2491.

Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT)--Members are technicians who respond to emergency calls in the Med Center, providing care and transportation for employees, visitors, and patients who are not in inpatient care. Language interpreters--Patient Access Services needs employees or students who are native speakers of foreign languages (excluding Spanish) to serve as volunteer interpreters in the Med Center. Call x5-4778.
