Kowalke

Kim Kowalke, professor of musicology at the Eastman School, has received a 1998 ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award and the Irving Lowens Award for an article he published on the German-American composer Paul Hindemith. The Deems Taylor Award is presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP); the Irving Lowens Award is presented by the Sonneck Society for American Music.

Robert Griggs, professor and chair of the Department of Neurology, and Seymour Schwartz, Distinguished Alumni Professor and former chair of the Department of Surgery, were recently elected to the Institute of Medicine, a division of the National Academy of Sciences.

Donald Bordley--associate chair for education, residency program director, and associate professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry--has been appointed to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 Test Material Development Committee for Medicine. USMLE assesses doctors' understanding of and ability to apply concepts and principles important in health and disease.

Hong Li, assistant professor of nursing at the School of Nursing, was recently presented the James G. Zimmer New Investigator Research Award from the Gerontological Health section of the American Public Health Association. The award, which recognizes excellence in the research of aging and disability, was based on Li's research of family care for hospitalized elders.
