Renowned Puerto Rican author to lecture

A uthor Rosario Ferré will give a talk about her writing, read from her works, and answer questions from the audience during an appearance on Friday, April 9, at 1 p.m. in the River Campus Interfaith Chapel.

Ferré

Ferré, one of Puerto Rico's most important and provocative living writers, has been active as a poet, essayist, novelist, short-story writer, and literary critic for more than 20 years. Her writing explores the condition of women under patriarchy, the possibilities for female creativity, and Puerto Rico's complicated political and linguistic identity.

Ferré is bilingual and many of her works have been translated into several languages. Her last two novels, The House on the Lagoon and Eccentric Neighborhoods, were written and published directly in English. They portray the complex social and cultural history of the island through family saga and geography.

In addition to her writing, Ferré is a member of the board of directors of the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture and vice president of the Ponce Museum of Art in Puerto Rico. She has held visiting professorships at North American institutions such as Rutgers and Johns Hopkins universities.

Her appearance is sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, the College Dean's Office, the Department of Religion and Classics, the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies, and the Spanish and Latin Students Association. For more information contact Beth Jorgensen, associate professor of Spanish, x5-4265.
