Sitzmann designated chair of surgery
J ames Sitzmann has been named Alumni Distinguished Professor of Surgery and chair of the Department of Surgery at the Medical Center and surgeon-in-chief at Strong Memorial Hospital. Currently, Sitzmann is chair of the Department of Surgery and associate dean of clinical research at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

SitzmannHe brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new role at URMC, which he assumes on June 1. He spent nearly 20 years at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and University School of Medicine where he did his residency. He rose to the position of professor of surgery and oncology at the medical school and director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the hospital.
Sitzmann earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School.
He has received several research awards and most recently the 1998 Best Resident Teacher Award at Georgetown University Medical Center. He also is involved in multiple professional committees and editorial boards.
