Ibsen's Ghosts comes to Todd Theater

HAUNTED HEART--Sophomore Tessa Farmer plays Mrs. Alving, who welcomes the return of her son Osvald, played by sophomore Anthony Bagnetto, in the International Theater Program's production of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts. The face of senior Kelly Karl, who plays the maid, Regina, looms in the background.

H enrik Ibsen's provocative drama Ghosts will open on Thursday, April 22, at 8 p.m. in the Todd Theater in Todd Union. Presented by the International Theater Program, the play will run on April 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and May 1 at 8 p.m., and on April 25 at 3 p.m. The May 1 production will be ASL-interpreted for the deaf community.

Ghosts is the story of a son's return to his family home, haunted by the specter of an unknown father and a horrifying secret. The play explores the nature of inheritance in the literal and metaphysical sense.

Ibsen, considered the father of modern drama, crafted Ghosts as a play of love expressed and repressed, of the life force and the death wish, of living and fading memories, and of the past that continues to haunt people's waking lives. The play is translated by internationally renowned Ibsen scholars Brian Johnson and Rick Davis.

The production will be contemporary. Using video and live action, Ghosts will be the theater program's first real foray into multimedia. The production is directed and designed by Nigel Maister, associate director of the theater program. He will work with New York City videographer Kay Hines, Canadian lighting designer Sharon Reid, costume designer Kate Carroll, and sound designer Obadiah Eaves to achieve the distinctly eerie atmosphere.
