Campuses ready for 149th Commencement

R ochester's 149th Commencement is set for Sunday, May 16. Scheduled to deliver the Commencement address is Edgar Bronfman, Sr., who also will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Chairman of The Seagram Company Ltd., Bronfman has worked to convince Swiss banks to release funds belonging to Holocaust survivors and families of its victims.

Commencement ceremonies for bachelor's and master's degree candidates will start at 9 a.m. on the Eastman Quadrangle of the River Campus and will proceed come rain or come shine.

Faculty receiving awards during the ceremony include John Lambropoulos, professor of mechanical engineering and department chair. He will be awarded the Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Lynne Orr, assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, will receive the G. Graydon and Jane W. Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching for a Nontenured Member of the Faculty. Orr joined the faculty in 1993.

In addition, Jay Last '51 will receive the Hutchison Medal. A founder of the Fairchild Semiconductor Corp., Last went on to become a vice president at Teledyne, Inc. The Hutchison Medal is the highest honor the University gives to its alumni.

Commencement ceremonies for doctoral candidates from the College (Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences), Eastman School, Warner School, School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, and Simon School will be held on Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. in Eastman Theatre.

At this ceremony Bingham Powell, Jr. will receive the University Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching. Professor Powell is a 30-year veteran of the political science department. Morris Fiorina '71 (M.A.), '72 (Ph.D.) and Lewis Rowell '55E, '58E (Ph.D.) will each be honored with Rochester Distinguished Scholar Medals. Fiorina is professor of policial science at Stanford University; Rowell is professor of music theory and faculty member in the ethnomusicology and India studies programs at Indiana University.

The Commencement ceremony for M.D. graduates of the School of Medicine and Dentistry will be held on Sunday, May 23, at 11 a.m. in Eastman Theatre. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation at the National Institutes of Health, will deliver the Commencement address and receive an Honorary Doctor of Science degree.

The Simon School Commencement will take place on Sunday, June 13, at 10 a.m. in Eastman Theatre. Charles O. Rossotti--commissioner of Internal Revenue, and co-founder and former chairman and CEO of American Management Systems, Inc.--will deliver the Commencement address.

A total of 2,433 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees will be conferred at the Commencement ceremonies.
