UTD: 'Got questions? We got answers.'

A s the new phone system begins its installation and activation period at the University, questions are being raised about voice mail and phone service. Featured here are answers to some of the frequently asked questions that have come to the attention of the University Telecommunications Division.

Q: Will my messages be deleted from the new voice-mail system? If so, under what conditions?
A: Older messages will automatically be deleted from the new voice-mail system to keep capacity available for new messages. Messages that have been played (listened to) will be deleted seven days after they are played. Messages that have not been played (not listened to) will not be deleted until they are 21 days old. If you require a copy of any particular message for special circumstances (security, human resources, etc.), please call the UTD Help Desk at x4-HELP. The Help Desk can arrange for the message to be transferred to tape for a permanent record.

Q: Will I still be able to get my messages from the old voice-mail system after I've been converted to NEC phones?
A: Yes. You can still access your old voice-mail messages by dialing into voice mail using the same extension you used before (x4-3661, x4-3662, x4-3663, or x4-3664). You will have to enter your extension and password as if you were accessing your voice mail from outside the University. You will have access to your old voice mail for at least seven days after you begin to use your new NEC telephone. If you have an old voice-mail message that must be saved for special circumstances, please call the UTD Help Desk to have the message copied to tape.

Q: Can I access my new voice mail box from a ROLM phone?
A: Yes, but you must follow these steps: Call x4-3660. When the system answers, enter your mailbox number (extension) followed by the * key. Then, enter your passcode (or the default passcode given to you if this is the first time you are calling into your new mailbox).

Q: Can I transfer calls from a ROLM phone to an NEC phone, or from an NEC phone to a ROLM phone?
A: Yes, but there is a slight difference. When transferring from a ROLM to an NEC phone, you must wait until the party or voice mail answers before hanging up. If you hang up before the call is answered on the NEC phone, the call will be automatically routed back to you. When transferring a call from an NEC phone to a ROLM phone, you must wait at least three seconds before hanging up. It is not necessary to wait for an answer. However, if you hang up before the three seconds have lapsed, the call will be automatically routed back to you.

Q: What is the "freeze period" I've been hearing about?
A: Due to the complexity of the telephone replacement project, it is necessary to freeze all move, add, and change activity during a short critical period. On the River, South, Eastman, and Mt. Hope campuses, the freeze period began on June 30 and ends on August 3. At the Medical Center, the freeze period will begin on August 4 and end on September 7. During this period, UTD will accept Requests for Telephone Service (RFTS) forms, but the work will be scheduled for sometime after the freeze period ends.
