Wilson Day '99 draws near

On Friday, August 27, the Wilson Day Community Service Program will mark its 11th year.

Last year, over 800 new students, faculty, staff, and alumni joined 50 neighborhood organizations in revitalization projects and community service work. Staff, faculty, and alumni led groups of students to work over a five-hour period. Some organized a carnival at Hillside Children's Center. A number of participants did fix-up jobs with the South Wedge Planning Committee or Habitat for Humanity. Buses left campus by about 9:30 a.m. and the last work group returned to campus at about 4 p.m.

To volunteer for this year's Wilson Day, call the Dean of Students Office, x5-4085.

Yodefat program wins awards

The television program chronicling the Univer-sity's dig in Yodefat, Israel, has received two national awards and been scheduled for rebroadcast on national television.

Echoes from the Ancients, produced by Rochester public television station WXXI, was a winner in the documentary category of the Eastern Educational Television Network Program Awards. It also received a Finalist Bronze Telly Award, presented for outstanding cable television and non-network film and video production.

PBS has scheduled the program for a second national broadcast at 10 p.m. (Eastern) on Thursday, August 26. The hour-long documentary details the University's historic archaeological collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority to excavate the nearly 2000-year-old site. A WXXI crew traveled to Yodefat in 1996 and again in 1997 to film footage of the dig. It was broadcast nationally on PBS last December.

The sale will concentrate on household items for newly relocated graduate and international students, staff, and faculty. New this year will be 15 booths for craftspeople and vendors, plus food and music.

Learn to write a business plan

In the fall, the Simon School will offer "A Special Course in Entrepreneurship: How to Write a Successful Business Plan" for University employees. It will examine the management skills and tools associated with innovation and new-business development.

The course targets individuals who are considering starting a business, as well as those who want to get better at recognizing potential new products and business opportunities generated by University research activity.

Developing a business plan for a start-up will be an integral part of the course. Plans will be critiqued by the instructor, James Doyle, who has an extensive background in venture capital and small-business management. The class also will cover a broad range of new-venture topics from the perspective of the entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

The nine-week course will be held on Fridays, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., starting October 1. The course will be augmented by guest lectures by entrepreneurs from several Rochester companies. Guest lectures will take place on Thursdays, 5:50 p.m. to 7:20 p.m. All classes will be held in Schlegel Hall on the River Campus.

University employees can enroll in this course using a tuition waiver from the Human Resources office; refer to personnel policy No. 304. Maximum class size is 30 students and the deadline for enrollment is Wednesday, September 1.
