Scheible named new basketball coach
Scheible was named women's basketball coach and sports information director at Elmira in 1992. He inherited a program that posted 25 wins in the five previousyears and had its last winning season in 1982-83. In 1995, he was named assistant athletic director at Elmira and oversaw scheduling, coordinating of officials, team travel, practice scheduling, and eligibility. He went on to coach Elmira into the NCAA Division III playoffs in each of the last two seasons, including an appearance in the "Sweet Sixteen" in 1998. Before that, he led his team to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York Championship for three straight years. Over that five-year playoff run, Elmira's record is 96-45. Scheible's record as a head coach is 143-71 in eight seasons. He was named the Empire Athletic Association's Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999, and was chosen as the New York State Coach of the Year in 1998. "The search committee was extremely impressed by Jim's proven track record and his ability to build a competitive women's basketball program," said George VanderZwaag, director of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. "We feel that we've identified an outstanding coaching talent." Scheible graduated from Clarkson University in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering; he received his MBA from Clarkson in 1989. He also served as an assistant coach at the university in 1988-89. A year later, Scheible was named the interim head coach. Scheible will be the fifth women's basketball coach in Rochester's history. He replaces Joyce Wong who announced her retirement in mid-July. Wong will serve as a special assistant to Vice President and Dean of Students Paul Burgett this year. She remains as the senior women's administrator. The Yellowjackets open the 1999-2000 season on Friday, November 19, against SUNY at Fredonia in the University of Rochester/Holiday Inn Airport Tip-Off.
