LLE holds symposium, honors teacherA unique opportunity for high school students to work with some of the world's top optical scientists culminated with presentations by 12 local students at the 1999 Summer High School Student Research Symposium at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics on August 25.The students spent eight weeks this summer working on individual research projects supervised by LLE's scientific staff. During the symposium, each student had 10 minutes to present his or her research to family members, teachers, and members of the laboratory's scientific and technical staff. This is the 11th year of LLE's program, which is intended to give students opportunities to work in a modern research environment under realistic conditions. The students were selected from more than 60 applicants. This year's participants were as follows: Kendra Bussey, Pittsford Sutherland High School; Michael Harvey, R.J. Davis High School; Peter Hopkins and Aman Narang, The Harley School; Jyoti Kandlikar, Lutao Ning, and Rohit Rao, Brighton High School; Brian Kubera, Webster High School; Alice Tran, Spencerport High School; Jordan VanLare, Victor High School; and Jeffrey Vaughan and Emily Walton, Fairport High School. Also during the symposium, LLE presented its 1999 William D. Ryan Inspirational Science Teacher Award to mathematics teacher John Harvey of Honeoye Falls-Lima Senior High School. The award includes a $1,000 prize. The laboratory relies on teachers like Harvey to draw out of students an interest in science and technology. LLE created the award program to recognize outstanding teachers who inspire such students to pursue careers in science, math, or technology. Harvey was nominated by Jeremy Yelle and David Rea, who worked in the summer research program two years ago.
