Strings capture the spotlight at EastmanF our prominent musicians--violinist Oleh Krysa, fiddler Mark O'Connor, and folk duo Jay Ungar and Molly Mason--will share the stage and the spotlight in a special concert in Eastman Theatre on Friday, October 1, at 8 p.m. The concert features the Eastman Philharmonia conducted by Mendi Rodan, Eastman School professor of conducting and ensembles. The performance is a highlight of a three-day national string teaching-and-playing symposium sponsored by the American String Teachers Association along with the National School Orchestra Association and the Eastman School. All four musicians also are involved in other aspects of the symposium. The concert's diverse program, which showcases both classic orchestral works and contemporary music for the string repertoire, opens with Cuban Overture, one of George Gershwin's few orchestral compositions. That will be followed by Tzigane, Maurice Ravel's classic work for violin and orchestra, featuring Eastman professor and internationally respected violinist Oleh Krysa. The orchestra will close the first half with Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. After intermission, concertgoers will experience a different type of music. Fiddler Jay Ungar and guitarist Molly Mason--two of America's best-known folk musicians--will perform three movements from Harvest Home Suite, which appears on their recently released CD Harvest Home. Then, Grammy Award-winning fiddler Mark O'Connor will close the concert as soloist in a performance of his own Fiddle Concerto. Discounted tickets are available for University faculty, staff, and students. Tickets are available at Ticket Express, 100 East Ave., or by calling 222-5000. They also will be available at the theater box office one hour before the start of the concert.
