UTD offers answers to call-forwarding questions

T he updated phone system gives users the ability to call forward either internal or external calls, or call forward them both, using separate prompts. Using only one prompt won't forward all calls.

For details on how to forward internal and external calls for a particular extension on a phone--and how to cancel call forwarding--refer to the "Digital Telephone Users Guide" that has been distributed. Users don't have to use the Toggle and Forward buttons to call forward. Simply skip the step that mentions pressing Toggle to forward an internal call, and press *40 or *41 rather than FWD as is detailed in the users guide.

However, if a department uses the call forward feature, the Toggle and Forward buttons are the links to customize call forwarding. To "read" the Toggle and Forward buttons on a phone, first look to see if the Toggle light is on. (It may help to link the word "internal" with the Toggle button.) When the Toggle light is on, the Forward button shows the status of the internal calls. When the Toggle light is off, the Forward button shows the status of the external calls.

For example, if both the Toggle and Forward lights are on, then internal calls (Toggle on) are forwarded (FWD on). If the Toggle light is off but the Forward light is on, then external calls (Toggle off) are forwarded (FWD on). To determine what calls are being forwarded, check to see if the Forward light is on. If it is, then check to see if the Toggle light is on. This will determine whether internal or external calls are forwarded.

If there are questions or comments regarding call forwarding or any other features offered through the updated phone system, call the UTD Help Desk, x4-HELP (x4-4357). A training video is airing through October on the Staff Education Network at the Medical Center and on CC-TV on the River Campus, which also provides information on the new phone system.
