Stonehurst Regatta rows back into town

C rew teams representing more than 30 universities in the Northeast, Midwest, and parts of Canada will compete in the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta on Sunday, October 10.

The competition, in its 11th year on the Genesee River in Genesee Valley Park, is a major fall rowing event and a highlight of the city of Rochester's River Romance Weekend. The races, which run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., are co-hosted by the University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Last year's regatta drew more than 8,000 people; about 1,000 college students--both men and women--compete.

Viewing the races in Genesee Valley Park, south of Elmwood Avenue on the University side of the park, is free. Besides RIT and Rochester, other schools set to compete are Dartmouth College and Brown and Harvard Universities. Awards for winning teams will be presented at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

At noon, high school students from the crew clubs in the Pittsford and Brighton School Districts will row in an exhibition.

Musical groups from RIT and the University will perform throughout the day, and clowns and face painters will entertain children. Before the races begin, a pancake breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Tickets can be purchased that morning.
