TO:The University Community

FROM:University Information Technology Divisions

RE:Y2K Readiness

The information technology divisions of the University (Administrative Computing Services, Academic Technology Services, Data Center Services, University Telecommunications Division, and Information Security) are ready for the year 2000.

A substantial amount of work by the IT organizations has been completed to ensure our customers will continue to receive the same levels of service they currently enjoy. As a result of these efforts, faculty, staff, and students will be able to access information, receive and send e-mail, receive printouts, use the telephone, access the Internet, and complete other types of transactions just as they normally do. The year-to-date progress made by the IT organizations is as follows: inventory components, 100 percent; vendor research and review, 99 percent; certification testing, 79 percent; and contingency planning, 93 percent.

A Y2K project team has been formed to assist the IT community with Y2K-related issues, concerns, or problems. Team members include Stephen Zimmer (IT Y2K coordinator), Rachelle Less (ACS), Ralpha Welker (ACS), Bill Waterhouse (ATS), Scott Wells (DCS), Jeanette Metzger (UTD), and Liudvikas Bukys (Information Security). The Y2K team will coordinate and triage issues that may occur as a result of the date change.

During the month of December, an IT Y2K help line will be activated. Faculty, staff, and students can call x4-2Y2K and leave voice mail for the Y2K team and the call will be returned by the next business day. Staff will cover the help line 24 hours a day starting on Monday, December 27, and continuing through Friday, January 7, to ensure that any Y2K issues are tracked and resolved in a timely manner. The help line is intended to provide support for Y2K incidents only.

University departments have received multiple invitations for Y2K assistance. Some River Campus departments have recently been sent letters informing the department that a nonresponse will be taken to mean that the department itself is taking on the responsibility of ensuring Y2K compliance for its desktop computers, as well as providing hardware and software support for the department's computer users. If you have any questions or concerns about River Campus departmental desktop computing support, please contact Bill Waterhouse, the ATS Y2K project leader (billw@ats.rochester.edu or x5-9074). General questions about your computer systems should be addressed to your support representative from ACS, ATS, DCS, or UTD.
