TO:The River Campus Community

FROM:University Telecommunications Division's
Telephone Project Team

RE:Completion of the Telephone Modernization Project

There are several activities continuing on the River Campus to complete the telephone system conversion. They are outlined below.

Automatic call distribution (ACD): Telephones that are used in ACD groups are still ROLM phones. The new ACD configuration is in the final stages of design and testing. The transition from ROLM to NEC is scheduled for November. In preparation for that, we have revisited each ACD design for telephones and made minor adjustments. We have been waiting for software modifications to be made to the new system before continuing with this portion of the project.

Low-speed (ROLM) data conversion: A small population of users continue to require the use of low-speed data (9,600-baud service that connects users to mainframes). Many of these applications are backup resources to network-based services. Those users will be using a modem solution on the new system. When the system is in place and testing is complete, we will be contacting the telephone department coordinator in each area to schedule the installation of the modem and low-speed data connection. The ROLM telephone will be replaced with the new NEC phone at that time.

Telephone "move" and "change" requests: We have documented a process with our vendor to accomplish telephone additions, changes, and moves until the overall project is completed. We are working with vendor team members to accomplish the in-field work necessary to make the requested changes to your telephone equipment. If you have questions about this process or the status of your order, please contact our 4-HELP desk, x4-4357.

Metered business-line conversion: Once we have completed the telephone placement for the River Campus, we will begin contacting those departments that asked for their metered business lines to be moved to analog service on the new telephone system. We will convert and test the service and answer any questions about reprogramming fax machines. This portion of the project is being moved up to facilitate system savings for the University. Each metered business line that we convert will result in savings to the department and significant savings to the University.

Special circuits: Special circuits connect Blue Light Emergency Telephones and other special applications. We are identifying those circuits, tagging them, and moving them to the new telephone system. Once complete, we will have all services on the new telephone system and will be able to retire the ROLM system. The first "switch" slated for retirement is the Eastman switch. We will be able to terminate service there in the next 30 days.
