Research participants neededCrohn's disease--Crohn's disease patients who are dependent on steroids are needed for a research study. Lab tests, medications, and clinic visits are free, and mileage compensation is available. Call x5-6219.AIDS vaccine--Healthy, HIV-negative volunteers between the ages of 18 and 60 are needed for clinical research trials of HIV-prevention vaccines. Participants will receive up to $700. Call x3-AIDS. Depression--Mothers who have been depressed or had manic depression at some time since the birth of their child are needed for a research study. The study is open to families with children ages 3 to 8 who are not receiving public assistance. Mothers must have at least a high school education. All parents and children will complete one two-hour University-based visit. There is a $20 payment to each family for participation. Call x5-2014. Learning disabilities--University students with a reading-type learning disability are needed for a study of an alternative treatment for learning disabilities. Students must be at least 18 years old and provide official documentation of disability. The study requires about eight hours of treatment on campus and keeping a daily log. Otitis media--Children ages 12 months-7 years who are in good health and have had at least one episode of "otitis media"--commonly referred to as an ear infection--following a cold within the last 12 months are needed for a study to evaluate an investigational oral medication. The child must have had cold symptoms during the past 24 hours and be available to visit the study office five times in 14 days. Obesity--Overweight volunteers ages 45-70 are needed for a control group in a clinical trial, which involves one clinic visit. Participants will receive free heart ultrasound and cardiac consultation. Call x5-0516. Diabetes--Normal, healthy volunteers ages 35-70 are needed for a metabolism study. It includes one overnight inpatient visit (about 18 hours). Stipends of $300 will be provided for qualified volunteers who complete the study. Call J. Woerle, x3-4333. Type II diabetes--People who have Type II diabetes and are otherwise healthy are needed for a study. It includes one overnight inpatient visit (about 24 hours). Type II diabetes--People who have had Type II diabetes for at least six months are needed for a clinical research study of an investigational drug. The study involves the dose response of an oral diabetic agent on blood insulin levels. Participants must be ages 30-70 and must not be on insulin. They receive stipends up to $2,000. Type I and Type II diabetes--People with Type I or Type II diabetes are needed for a clinical research trial of an investigational drug. The study involves an "aerosol (inhaled) insulin" that is rapidly absorbed through the lungs and may promote better control of diabetes. Participants must be ages 18-80, on insulin or oral diabetic medication, and a nonsmoker for the last six months. Laboratory testing, physical exams, and other tests are free. Call Barb Johnson, x3-4922. Spending project--Adults who are age 18 or older and are working 30 hours per week or more are needed for a study. They will be asked to keep records of their purchases plus psychological information as they go about their lives for 21 days. Participants will receive $50 and a personalized report on their spending and other data. Call the spending project, x5-7261. Physical decline/frailty with advancing age--Adults ages 65-84 are needed for a multi-center research study to investigate a medication that may decrease the risk of physical decline and frailty with advancing age. Call the Center for Lifetime Wellness, 760-6606. Air pollution study--Healthy adults ages 18-40 who have never smoked are needed for a study. Several visits and moderate exercise is required. Honorarium paid. Call Donna, x5-4163. Smoking--Adults age 18 or older who smoke at least five cigarettes a day and have considered quitting are needed for a study. Participants will meet with project staff to provide information about their smoking and diet, and will be contacted a few times over the following 18 months to explore their feelings and choices about their health-related behavior. Call the Smokers' Health Study, 922-7670. Hepatitis B vaccine--Adults ages 18-55 in good health are needed for a research study of an investigational vaccine booster with Hepatitis B vaccine.
