University embraces religious diversityT he River Campus Interfaith Chapel is sponsoring a free event on Monday, December 6, at 7 p.m. in its main sanctuary to educate the community about religious diversity at the University. The second of its kind, it will use music, dance, traditional dress, prayer, ceremony, and testimonials to explore the variety of faiths on campus.Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, Jain, Sikh, Hindu, and Jewish students will present events and music for the celebration. It will feature a Chinese Lion Dance; a gospel performance; an African welcoming dance; readings from the Koran; and a Sikh Raag, music sung and played from Sikh tradition accompanied by harmonium. In addition, 10 students from different faiths will speak not only about their religious beliefs and what they value most, but also about the kind of stereotypes and prejudices that they face. Junior Rahuldeep Sing Gill, from the Sikh faith, will emcee. Anne Meredith, instructor in the religion and classics department, will discuss religious diversity in academic and faith communities, and William Scott Green, dean of the College and director of the Center for Judaic Studies, will offer opening remarks.
