January 11--Artist Lecture. David Row, New York City painter and printmaker, speaks on his work. Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Free with gallery admission.

January 13--Lecture. Nationally acclaimed photographer Jayne Wexler speaks on "Interpretive Portraits." She is the author of two photo essays: Daughters & Mothers and Girlfriends. Auditorium, 6:30 p.m. Reception with cash bar, 5:30 p.m. Free.

January 14, 16, 21, 23--Exhibition Tour. Highlights works from the exhibition New Realism for a New Millennium. Meet at the admission desk, 2 p.m. Free with gallery admission.

January 17--Computer Workshop. In the course "Computers Demystified," participants learn quick and easy ways to put their computers to good use and save hours of aggravation. Fee/registration required. Creative Workshop, 7-10 p.m. Call the gallery at ext. 3056 to register.

January 18--Viewpoints. Helen Miranda Wilson, a realist artist whose work was featured in MAG's 1997 show Rediscovering the Landscape of the Americas, speaks on her work. Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Free with gallery admission.

January 20--Third Thursdays: Art After Hours. Fortysomethings and above are invited to dance (or just listen), tour the gallery, and enjoy free munchies and a cash bar (drinks and desserts extra). Pavilion/Cutler Union, 6-9 p.m. Tickets required. For more information call the gallery at ext. 3035.

January 21--Preschool Family Workshop. The workshop, which is led by Warren Mianecke, is for children ages 2-5 with an adult and includes a story and an exploratory tour of the gallery. Adults and children work together to create an art project. Fee/reservations required. Creative Workshop, 10:15-11:45 a.m. Call the gallery at ext. 3056 to make reservations.

January 18-March 26--Javaka Steptoe: In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall. Steptoe's picture book includes his illustrations of poems by African-American writers--including Rochester's David Anderson--that celebrate the relationship African-American fathers share with their children and grandchildren. MAG is the first museum to exhibit these illustrations.

Through January 23--Visions of Angels. The exhibition takes a look at one of the 20th century's prevailing visions: the angel. Pictured on everything from watch dials to magazine covers, angels have joined the commercial scene while continuing to play their traditional role in Christian art and theology. Features old favorites, along with some seldom-seen treasures, to celebrate the turning millennium.

Through January 30--New Realism for a New Millennium. This exhibition showcases 41 nationally recognized artists who are using such classic genres as the landscape, the still life, and the portrait to put their own spin on realism. The artists, born mostly after WWII, include three who hail from this region: Maureen Brilla, Christine Henehan, and Sydney Licht.

Through 2001--About Face: Copley's Portrait of a Colonial Silversmith. In this new interactive installation, families can learn about John Singleton Copley, the most famous portrait painter in Colonial America, and his friend, silversmith Nathaniel Hurd, whom Copley painted. The installation offers a view of life in Colonial Boston. At the Dorothy McBride Gill Education Center.

Desperadoes and Daredevils: Books and Manuscripts by and about the Notorious and Brave. Great Hall, 2nd floor. January 10, 11, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Beginning January 12, Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-1 a.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, noon-1 a.m. Free and open to the public.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

CPR Classes--Offered by the Office for Educational Resources through June. To register and for more information call x5-7666 as soon as possible, as classes fill up quickly. Payment is required at least one week in advance. Medical Center, Room 2-7539. The American Heart Association's manual, required for original courses, is available in Room 2-7520 for a fee.

January 19--Basic Life Support Refresher Course (must attend one three-hour session). 1-4 p.m.

January 12, 19, 26--Basic Life Support Original Courses (must attend all three scheduled sessions). 9 a.m.-noon.

Noon Hour Health Bites--Informal, monthly series of health-/wellness-related topics sponsored by the Strong Employee Assistance Program. No fee or preregistration required. Feel free to bring a lunch. Tuesdays, noon-1 p.m. For more information call x5-4987.

January 11--Preparing for Menopause and Beyond. Presented by Carrie Nolan, nurse practitioner and educator, Westfall Women's Center. Nolan will discuss a healthy approach to some of the changes associated with menopause. Wilson Commons, Gowen Room.
