Jackson, Phelps issue mission statement

A fter an extensive series of discussions with students and others during the past calendar year, President Thomas Jackson and Provost Charles Phelps have issued a mission statement defining the University's goal of becoming an "inclusive community." It appears in its entirety below ("The University of Rochester, An Inclusive Community").

The statement is one among many actions taken in response to student concerns that diversity issues were not being appropriately addressed by the University. "The idea of the mission statement is to generally guide our efforts, and to set the tone for the concrete steps that we have begun to take and that we will continue to work on," Jackson said.

The president and provost will continue to meet with the Minority Students Advisory Board. Additional actions include:

  • Policies and recommendations to the senior administrative staff and to the academic deans about diversity efforts within the administrative and faculty ranks.
  • Focused activities to recruit undergraduates of diverse backgrounds.
  • Actions to recruit underrepresented-minority graduate students through an enhancement to the provost's Ph.D. Minority Fellowships Program.
  • Programs for service staff around the University to promote the existence of an inclusive community on campus.
  • Establishment of a Web site (which now can be found at www.rochester.edu/diversity).
